Department of Sociology Scholarships

Charlotte McCord was a loved and respected member of the Sociology faculty. She left us in the summer of 2005 after a protracted and heroic battle with breast cancer. She generously donated her retirement funds to create this scholarship for Non-Traditional students. Ms. McCord had once been a Non-Traditional student in the Sociology Department at Texas State (then Southwest Texas State).

This scholarship will be given to a non-traditional undergraduate sociology major who demonstrates academic success and enthusiasm for the field of sociology, two qualities Ms. McCord possessed and valued in her students.

Write a brief essay (500 words or less) which explains the applicant’s suitability for the award.

Ask one faculty member to write a letter of recommendation. 

The Clarence Schultz Sociology Scholarship was created to honor the long and exemplary teaching career of Distinguished Professor Emeritus Clarence C. Schultz and in appreciation of his numerous other contributions to Texas State University - San Marcos and to the Department of Sociology. 

To be considered, the student must be an undergraduate sociology major at Texas State University and be enrolled full-time (12 or more hours) during the semester(s) the award is received. Applicants must have completed 45 credit hours of study with at least 30 hours of credit earned at Texas State University. Applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.0+ and a GPA of 3.25+ in sociology at the time of application. If the award is distributed over two semesters, GPA averages must be maintained through the first semester on this Scholarship to continue eligibility for the award for the second semester. The award is for one year only, that is, the recipient may not reapply for the scholarship in subsequent years.

Compile a list of  a list of academic accomplishments, involvement in student organizations, volunteer work etc., and write a brief essay (500 words or less), which explains the applicant’s suitability for the award.

 Ask one faculty member to write a letter of recommendation.

Dr. Rollo Newsom, Distinguished Professor Emeriti began teaching at Texas State in 1966.  He served as the Chair of the Department of Sociology (1976-1981), Dean of the University College (1983-1986), and also as Vice President for Academic Affairs before retiring in 2008.

Dr. Donald T. Matlock, Professor Emeriti began his career at Texas State in 1968.  Dr. Matlock was Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Department of Sociology from 1986-1998. 

Recipient must be a senior, junior or sophomore classification with 45 hours of study completed.  Transfer students must have completed at least 30 hours at Texas State.

Recipient must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA in major of 3.25 at the time of application.

Shelby Renee Newman, a Texas State student (then SWT), who died as the result of an automobile accident in 1993, was an orientation assistant for two years and a member of the band for two years. Newman majored in Applied Sociology and received her Bachelor of Science degree posthumously in December 1993. Her parents, friends and supporters, created this scholarship in her honor.

Preference will be given to current and former residents of Kerrville, TX and Tivy, TX.

GPA of 3.0 overall, must be an undergraduate sociology major and have taken at least 6 hours in the discipline. 

Applicants will submit at least one letter of recommendation from a Texas State faculty member, as well as a 500 word letter of interest that includes information about how the knowledge learned as a sociology major will apply to their career and life beyond college.

Preference will be given to current and former residents of Kerrville, TX and Tivy, TX.

Dr. Sally Caldwell was a popular faculty member in the Department of Sociology at Texas State University who was recognized for her dedication to teaching the subject matter of statistics to undergraduates. She was a faculty member from 2000-2014. Dr. Caldwell was committed to providing support to students and she even created a textbook fund to help students who couldn't afford their textbooks. This scholarship, created in her memory, provides a means to help those who can demonstrate both financial need and academic success.

Recipients should meet the following requirements:
*enrolled full-time (12 hours for an undergraduate student, 9 hours as a graduate student)
*maintain a high GPA (3.0 for undergraduates and 3.5 for graduates)
*have a minimum of 15 credit hours in Sociology
*demonstrate financial need.
Applicants should submit at least one letter of recommendation from a Texas State faculty member as well as a 500-word letter of interest that includes information about their experiences as a Sociology student and discusses their financial need.

The Sally Caldwell Sociology Undergraduate Statistics Scholarship was established to honor Sally Caldwell's outstanding work over many years at Texas State University. Recipients must be Sociology majors in good standing with an overall GPA of at least 3.0. It is a preference that recipients have completed SOCI 3307 and received an “A” grade for the course. Contributions from Susan Day were used to establish this scholarship fund.

Requirements for the scholarship include:

• Undergraduate students with a 3.0 Texas State University GPA
• Majoring in Sociology
• Preference is for student to have completed SOCI 3307 course with an “A” grade
